Abstract: This study investigates the motivations of university students for playing poker as a leisure activity. Specifically, the purpose was to understand the motivational differences of online vs. face-to-face poker players, as well as the perceptions and beliefs towards poker. The main methodology used was qualitative research methods (focus group interviews). The findings show that student players in both groups played at home and for relatively low stakes. They are also both motivated to play because of the excitement and competition, but the intensity and level of competition was greater for the online poker players. In addition, it was found that online players were in general more extrinsically motivated by the economic rewards while face-to-face players were more prominently motivated by identified regulations or the social aspects of the game. Overall, the findings provide important implications for online gambling researchers, as it points to the growing potential for online poker and gambling to become detrimental to society if left unregulated.
